Fast ForWord
Fast ForWord is a computer based therapy program that "retrains" the brain to improve language skills. Fast ForWord is based on the theory that children with language disorders and auditory processing disorders are incapable of perceiving auditory information at a normal rate. Fast ForWord has the ability to slow down the presentation of an auditory message through computer video games designed for children. With a series of intense computer "exercises" the brain can be retrained to process better and faster thus improving language and reading skills.
In a report published in Time Magazine, July 5, 1999, John Greenwald stated "The Fast ForWord games are like mental aerobics-designed to strengthen weak connections in those parts of the brain that support language skills".
The Fast ForWord program is a very intense program requiring students to be on the computer completing exercises specifically geared to their individual needs 2 hours a day, for 5 days in a 6 to 8 week series, or one hour a day for 8 to 12 weeks. The students' progress is monitored by a speech language pathologist on site at BRSH.
Reports and research studies have demonstrated the success of this program for many children; however not every individual enrolled in Fast ForWord will have the same outcome. Scientific Learning Company does not yet know why some children benefit more than others, or why some may not benefit at all. "There is no silver bullet," warns Reid Lyon, the head of child development and behavior studies at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which is conducting a five-year study of Fast ForWord and other remediation programs. Because knowledge is the power that enables people to make good decisions, we strongly encourage families to research and understand Fast ForWord prior to starting the treatment.
